Primary election date bill before Senate

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Vermont Senate debates a bill today that would make the state's primary elections earlier.

If it passes, primary elections would be moved up to early August. The bill would also require clerks to report results for both primary and general elections on voting day.

Last year, the U.S. Justice Department sued Vermont because overseas ballots for military personnel were sent out late, which Secretary of State Jim Condos blames on the late August primary date.
