Hartford to hold off on stun guns

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, Vt. -

The town of Hartford has decided-- at least for now-- that it will not buy stun guns for its police department.

The department was authorized to buy the Tasers last year. However, the town manager is now delaying the purchase. Police say is partially in an attempt to improve the department's image in light of recent accusations of excessive force. There have also been high-profile cases regarding stun guns, including the death of a Thetford man who died after being shot by one in the chest.

"When there is a policy in effect for the use of the Taser, when officers are properly trained on proper use and it is used properly, it's a very effective tool. And we are not against Tasers, we are just holding on on purchasing the Tasers," said Deputy Chief Brad Vail of the Hartford Police Department.

Vail says the department is also waiting to see if state lawmakers enact new regulations regarding the use of stun guns.
