Vt. bomb squad trains in Hinesburg

HINESBURG, Vt. -

Two days after the Boston bombings, the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad had Hinesburg residents on edge. The bomb squad and tactical team were in full gear, staging at a gravel pit off Route 116. Turns out, it was a pre-planned training exercise. The units train separately each month, but twice a year they come together to practice joint responses. That helps the tactical team familiarize themselves with tools typically reserved for the bomb squad.

"There are occasions where they need to gain entry to a home that may be barricaded or locked and conventional tools aren't working. The bomb squad has some explosive-type tools that can aid them in gaining entry to a building," said Lt. Paul White, the commander of the Vt. State Police Bomb Squad.

State police say it used to be rare for these units to be called to the same scene, but changing threats and a rise in methamphetamine is requiring more joint responses.
