Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington received an American Heart Association Heart Saver award Wednesday.
The award comes after providers helped save the life of 11-year-old Payton Jones of Vergennes. Jones suffered a major heart attack at a swim meet that left her nearly dead. Her heart stopped 17 times. Cardiologists call her survival a miracle. Doctors say she has a rare genetic disease.
"Payton's story is an amazing example of the chain of survival with so many people involved," said Michelle Johnston of the American Heart Association. "They provided effective advanced life support continuously and also provided integrated post-cardiac arrest care. They worked tirelessly to save her and we applaud them for their efforts."
"It was just really overwhelming. She was perfectly healthy, we didn't expect anything, anything, just really confused about why it was happening. Umm, scary," said Cathy Jones, Payton's mom.
Payton Jones is 12 now and is doing well.
