U.S. Senate rejects expanded gun background checks

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The U.S. Senate has rejected expanded background checks for gun buyers.

It's a big setback for gun control advocates. They hoped the school shooting at Sandy Hook last year would sway Congress to take action to curb gun violence.

Fifty-four senators voted for the bill-- including Vermont Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders-- but that was six short of the 60 needed to avoid a Republican filibuster.

President Obama called it shameful day for Washington.
