Bogus charities try to profit from marathon tragedy

BOSTON -

Experts are warning the public to beware of bogus charities trying to profit from the Boston Marathon tragedy.

Just hours after the bombings, one scammer set up a Twitter account claiming to be associated with the Boston Marathon organization and promised to donate a dollar for every retweet. Authorities shut it down, but not before the account received more than 50,000 retweets.

Before you open your wallet, experts recommend sticking with well-established charities and making sure the organization is registered with a state agency.
