Wild winds are whipping through the region. They are taking down branches and trees in some areas, like a massive tree in Shelburne that came down at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service says winds were gusting up to 46 mph.
The owner, Louis Hanlon, tells us the tree is about 85-feet tall and 4-feet wide, and says it was a close call for him and his wife.
"I heard a really huge crash and it shook the house and I looked outside and this box elder tree, which is about 50 years old, had fallen. We actually had to cut some of the runners because they were hanging over the house. If this tree had fallen the other direction over here it would have crushed us in bed. It would have killed us," Hanlon said.
Hanlon says his fence was also damaged.
A wind advisory is in place for the Champlain Valley and Northern New York until late Friday night.
