MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A member of the Vermont Supreme Court plans to retire.

Justice Brian Burgess is stepping down Aug. 1. Burgess has been a justice since 2005. Before that, he served as a trial court judge, deputy attorney general and deputy commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry.

Chief Justice Paul Reiber called Burgess a friend who will be missed, not only for his intellect and common sense, but also for his thoughtful, deliberative approach to decision-making and his wry sense of humor.

And Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, released a statement thanking Burgess for serving the state. The governor said, "During his many years on the bench, he brought a sense of fairness, humility, and humor that endeared him to many. His down-to-earth presence and years of practical experience will be missed."
