WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man is getting one more chance to decide if he wants to change his plea for his role in a 2011 collision that killed a passenger.
Carlos Garcia, 20, of Sharon, was expected to plead guilty Tuesday. His lawyer said Garcia wasn't ready to proceed. The Valley News reports his decision to withdraw marks the fifth time the case's "final status conference" has been rescheduled at the defense's request.
Judge Robert Gerety in Windsor Superior Court set a final date for May 7. He said if the case isn't resolved by then, lawyers will pick a jury two days later and start a trial.
Police said Garcia was headed north on Vermont Route 14 in Sharon when he collided with another car, killing 53-year-old Zyra Flores of San Antonio, Texas.
