F-35 opponents protest at Sen. Leahy's office

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

F-35 opponents gathered outside Senator Patrick Leahy's Burlington office to demand greater transparency in the fighter jet basing debate.

This comes two weeks after a Boston Globe report alleged Vermont's senior senator may have used his political influence to get Burlington on the short list of potential bases. The report cited an unnamed Pentagon official, saying that the base-selection process was deliberately "fudged'' by military brass so that Leahy's home state would win.

About a dozen protestors, including Ben and Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen, accused Leahy of deceptive back room dealings.

"It's time for Vermont to say no, no to the corruption, no to the waste, no to blind acceptance of this Pentagon boondoggle that's destroying our jobs and our economy," Cohen said.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Senator Leahy called the protest a "publicity stunt" filled with fallacies, distortions and innuendo.
