Youth turkey season takes flight this weekend

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Young hunters will be going to bed early Friday night so they can be in the woods first thing Saturday.

This weekend is Youth Turkey season. Vermont has a healthy population of turkeys. It's estimated there are 45,000-50,000 birds in the Green Mountains.

Last year, 614 bearded turkeys were taken during youth season. Under the rules of the two-day hunt, youth hunters have to be joined by an adult mentor.
