Maple Festival gets a sweet start in St. Albans

Posted: Updated:

In the land of milk and maple...

"We have everything maple," says Lori Perley with the Vt. Maple Festival Store.

There's no smile shortage.

Just ask 9 year old Faith Lewis. Who's taste testing her way around the 47th Vermont Maple Festival. She's got a sweet tooth, or two ... or three.

Darren Perron: "Did you have a mission when you came to the Maple Festival?"

Lewis: "Yes."

Perron: "What is it?"

Lewis: "To eat fried dough, maple creamies, and cotton candy."

Perron: How are you doing on your mission?

Lewis: Good.

Perron: "What have you eaten so far?"

Lewis: "Fried dough and cotton candy."

Everyone has their favorite treat.

"Well, so far the best part was that I got to get maple lollipops!" says Jacob Birnbaum.

But one of the busiest spots is maple shot bar, where folks bellied up for free samples of the sweet stuff.

"You're supposed to take it like a shot," says Colby Dukas, who's serving the shots.

Colby and his pal, Alex ought to know. They've handed out hundreds, leaving folks with a sugar buzz -- and the boys feeling pretty good too.

"I am feeling happy on the inside. Warm," Dukas says.

If, after all that maple your stomach can take it, festival rides are a big hit with kids. But if you've over done it. The slow pace of ponies may be more your speed.

"A fun family activity," says Sharee Farnsworth. "Family friendly activity."

Sharee Farnsworth, who grew up in Franklin County, is back at the festival for the first time in 15 years. And is glad she made the trip.

"This is our first trip back since we moved to Virginia. We brought the kids up to have a good time!" Farnsworth says.

Between the food, the fun, and the folks visiting -- who isn't having a good time?
