Statehouse Sitdown: Phone systems

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A new problem with schools and the state's 9-1-1 system is emerging that could send help to the wrong place in a crisis.

House and Senate Committees recently learned that many schools' phone systems are centralized by town or district. It means the address that shows up in the 9-1-1 system when someone calls is the same regardless of where they call from.

For instance in many cases, the district office address would show when calling from a school, which could be miles away.

Legislators are looking at potential solutions.

"Sometimes it's not an expensive fix -- other times, when new systems are needed, it's more expensive," says Rep. Joan Lenes (D-Shelburne).

The House Committee is waiting on more information from the schools before they decide how to proceed. Statewide, it's believed few schools are currently in compliance.
