BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former Essex Junction optometrist and his wife have been sentenced to prison for failing to pay income taxes and trying to hide their money and assets from collection by the Internal Revenue Service.
The U.S. attorney for Vermont said Dr. John Ellison of Prior Lake, Minn., was sentenced on Monday to six months; Julia Ellison was sentenced to eight months.
Court records say the Ellisons, both 51, did not pay federal income taxes between 1999 and 2008 and tried to obstruct the IRS from collecting those payments. Court records say they transferred their real estate to trust entities entering into sham leases for his optometric equipment, maintaining bank accounts in her maiden name using transposed Social Security numbers and keeping money in an off-shore account.
