Vandalism closes Harwood Union High School

DUXBURY, Vt. -

Harwood Union High School in Duxbury was closed Wednesday after being vandalized overnight.

Authorities say the suspects broke in and sealed several bathroom drains with duct tape, causing extensive flooding and water damage. The building was closed Wednesday for cleanup.

Vermont State Police say they have no information on suspects. Central Vermont Crimestoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.

"It strictly appeared to be just water damage. I know that the school staff did mention that some of the carpets had been wet. They're going to have to get that aired out and some of the plumbing parts to the male bathroom-- some of the parts are missing, so they're going to have to replace those as well," Vt. State Police Trooper Todd Stackhouse said.

Outside, the front lawn was also heavily damaged. School officials did not have an estimate of the damage, but according to a press release, it was significant, widespread and costly. The school will remain closed Thursday.
