Author Lee Conrad Kemsley discusses her new historical fiction novel, "The Hunger Year."
The Hunger Year is a historical novel set in New England in the years just following the War of 1812. The story follows the adventurous young Magen Creed, who is forced by hardship to leave her home in northern New York state and head to a farm in Vermont that belongs to her missing father's family.
Unbeknownst to the citizens of this young America, the relentless march of the worst famine of the nineteenth century has begun, and The Hunger Year chronicles Magen's struggle to reconcile her newfound sense of home with the destruction and loss that surrounds her.
The novel is intended for older teen readers, but its rich detail can be easily appreciated by audiences of all ages.
