MONTPELIER, Vt. -

What started as a typical day in the Capital City turned into quite a scene, ending with the explosion of home-schooling materials.

"I have a little bit of adrenaline in me right now, hearing fire in the hole and an explosion shook me up a little bit," said Jonas Eno-Van Fleet, a witness to the scene after looking out his work window in Montpelier.

"I literally had a front row seat, balcony seating to the whole thing," said Eno-Van Fleet. He works across the street from the TD Bank. He knew something was wrong when he spotted the bomb squad blocking off Main and Langdon streets.

"They never evacuated the building so I figured I'd stick around," said Eno-Van Fleet.

"Witnesses say the package was there but they don't know who or how it got there," said Chief Tony Facos of the Montpelier Police Department.

Thursday afternoon someone left a suspicious package on the windowsill of the bank. After recent protests outside the bank, police didn't take chances. "We've been vigilant since probably 9/11, and I don't know that any other instance would raise that any higher. We're going to do our best to keep people safe," said Captain Dan Troidle of the Vermont State Police.

The bomb squad X-rayed the package, and then sent a robot to blow open the suspicious package with a specialized water cannon. Once it blew apart, it turned out it was a false alarm; just school books delivered in a sealed package. "I heard fire in the hole. I ducked and ran into the other room heard the explosion which apparently was them opening the package and there were books on the street," said Eno-Van Fleet.

Blocked off streets quickly reopened. Montpelier police say the sender and receiver of the package have both been identified and say it did not warrant any further investigation.
