Linda Derosia's seen it all in nearly a decade on the job picking up trash along Vermont's busiest roadways.
"Notebooks, money, tools, hammers, sledgehammers, ladders, whatever you can think of it's out there," said Derosia, who works for the Vt. Transportation Agency.
Friday, Derosia joined dozens of her co-workers along Interstate 89 in Middlesex to get a head start on Green Up Day 2013. The annual effort that attracts about 15,000 volunteers takes place Saturday, with a goal of getting trash off Vermont's roads and out of its parks and open spaces.
"We want to keep Vermont green. We want people to see Vermont with everything green; we don't want them to see all the trash on the side of the road," Derosia said.
Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, put in some time Friday morning, too, and offered some advice to passing motorists to make the job a little easier.
"If you throw less out your window, we will have to clean up less on Green Up Day," Shumlin said.
Shumlin plans to be back to help Saturday, but joked he'll be surveying the progress a little differently than it was done when the event got off the ground in 1970.
"Back in the first Green Up Day, Dean Davis got in a chopper and he flew around the state encouraging Vermonters to join us. Now, as you know, Vermont governors can't fly anymore without getting criticized, so I am going to walk around Vermont tomorrow to encourage Vermonters to join us greening up," Shumlin said.
Derosia says she and her team are looking forward to the help and that it, along with a kind word or friendly honk from passers-by, make the work they're doing year-round worth it.
"It makes it a lot easier for us to be out here knowing that we are being appreciated for what we do do," Derosia said.
Organizers expect to collect about 40,000 bags of trash Saturday.
