Vt. turkey hunting season underway

Posted: Updated:

Turkey hunting began this week in Vermont.

Hunters are in the woods before the sun comes up, many of them setting up in blinds so the birds can't see them.

The Fish and Wildlife department believes there are 45,000-50,000 wild turkeys in the state.

Turkey hunting has become popular with those who love the outdoors. Last year, more than 18,000 hunters took part in the fall and spring seasons.

"Oh, I like the idea of getting out there early in the morning listening to the woods come alive, listening to the song birds start in the morning. Then the crows start squealing and the birds start gobbling. When they start gobbling, you are out there and it is just between you and them," said Archie Hodgdon, a turkey hunter.

Last year, hunters took more than 6,000 birds during the two seasons. Most of them-- nearly 80 percent-- were killed during the month of May.
