NY's Essex County OKs earlier bar closing time

Posted: Updated:

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Lawmakers in the northern New York county that's home to Lake Placid have approved a measure requiring bars to close an hour earlier.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that the Essex County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to change the legal closing time from 4 a.m. to 3 a.m. The measure now goes to the State Liquor Authority for final approval.

The Adirondack county's last call for serving alcohol in a bar had been 3 a.m. from the mid-1970s until 2005, when the board changed the closing time to 4 a.m.

A 2 a.m. closing time had been proposed, but business owners in the village of Lake Placid objected and the 3 a.m. time was set as a compromise.
