Vt. House approves driver's license for migrant workers

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Vermont House has given final approval by a wide margin to a migrant worker driver's license bill.

Last-minute amendments by opponents attempted to address issues including whether other verification is needed, like fingerprints, or even possible abuse of the cards by would-be drug cartels or terrorists.

"Because what we don't want to do is undermine the security apparatus of the United States government to protect us," said Rep. Peter Fagan, R-Rutland.

But supporters say the migrants would still be required to pass a road test and have insurance, and that the ID can only be used for driving and other basic identification. Public Safety officials, as well as the governor, support the measure.
