BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A new face is greeting visitors at the Vermont Children's Hospital. Wednesday morning, patients unveiled a hand-painted bear at the entrance to the Children's Specialty Center.

The artwork was originally created as part of fundraiser for the Committee on Temporary Shelter. The bear was bought at auction by the real estate company Lang McLaughry and donated to the hospital.

"If kids are having a hard time it's nice to know that they can come over and just kind of play with the bear or play around it and maybe it will make them feel happier," said Elizabeth Cleary, the artist.

"I want them to think that the community cares. Artists came together, businesses came together and that this is a wonderful, caring community," said Rita Markley of the Committee on Temporary Shelter.

The auctioned collection of bears raised $12,000. COTS says the additional resources helped hundreds of families avoid homelessness.
