The legislature Monday gave final approval to a marijuana decriminalization bill.
The bill removes criminal penalties for people caught in possession of up to an ounce of pot. Instead they would get a civil citation, similar to a traffic ticket, of up to $300. Larger quantities would still be treated as misdemeanors or felonies with potential jail time.
Governor Peter Shumlin is expected to sign the bill, making Vermont the 17th state to decriminalize possession of small quantities of marijuana.
