Burlington Telecom dispute likely headed to federal court

Posted: Updated:

No deal between the city of Burlington and Citibank over $30 million used to finance Burlington Telecom.

Citbank says Burlington broke the terms of a $30 million lease agreement for equipment to expand BT and sued in federal court. Three years ago the city stopped paying the rent when BT's finances fell apart. Now talks with a federal mediator over how much Burlington should be required to pay the bank have fallen apart. That means federal court action will resume. Mayor Miro Weinberger vowed to clean up the BT mess when he was elected.

"My job is to make sure that we get a fair settlement for the people of Burlington who have already paid far more for Burlington Telecom than anyone every expected - and we're not there yet," said Weinberger, D-Burlington.

The mayor said there is no immediate court action planned.
