Burlington promotes walking, biking, bus rides

Posted: Updated:

Burlington is taking new steps to encourage more people to walk, bike or take the bus.

The "Way to Go" Multi-Modal Bike Tour kicked off Thursday morning in downtown Burlington. Mayor Miro Weinberger was joined by bikers to promote active transportation as they rode through the streets making stops along the way.

"The idea with it is to get a group of people moving around Burlington using all the different alternative transportation options we have-- biking, walking, using bikeshare cars, using the bus-- and show both what a great infrastructure we have here and what our challenges are," said Weinberger, D-Burlington.

One stop was at the new Hotel Vermont, where the manager shared plans to install Bikeshare for visiting guests. The tour then moved on to the Sustainability Academy for the "Bike For Life" program, where students have access to bikes year-round.

Last year, nearly 4,000 participants saved more than 300,000 miles during the "Way to Go" bike week.
