HANOVER, N.H. -

A warning to pet owners in the Upper Valley -- be on the lookout for rabid animals.

Police in Hanover New Hampshire were recently notified about two raccoons that came into contact with family pets.  The raccoons were euthanized and sent to the state lab.  In both cases the animals tested positive for rabies.

"They should be careful. They should make sure their animals are vaccinated against rabies.  They should keep them restrained if they can.  If they are going to let the dog outside, either keep a close eye on it in the yard or keep it on a leash of some sort so it can't wander off," said Hanover Police Lt. Michael Evans.

In both cases, police say the pet were vaccinated. Police say they have seen rabies cases flare up in the past in the area, but they the disease eventually runs its course.
