BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A St. Albans teen will spend at least a couple of years behind bars for a DUI accident that killed his passenger.

James Companion, 17, changed his plea to guilty Tuesday.

Companion told investigators he had taken five shots of alcohol before he smashed his car into a telephone pole in Colchester almost exactly one year ago. The accident trapped Tasha Maring, 25, in the passenger seat. She would later be pronounced dead at the scene.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Companion will serve between two and three years in prison.
