Vt. presses federal government on nuclear storage

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont and other states are pressing the federal government to do something about radioactive waste being stored at nuclear plants like Vermont Yankee.

Nuclear plants keep all of their old fuel rods on site, either in spent fuel pools or concrete casks. It was never the intent that the dangerous radioactive material would remain on site indefinitely, but the federal government has never built a long-term storage facility.

With spent fuel piling up at plants around the country, states are increasingly concerned about environmental risks. Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut have filed a petition with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission calling for a more expansive environmental review of waste storage.
