Crews work to reopen flooded Vt. roads

Posted: Updated:
ESSEX, Vt. -

Heavy rains have caused more flooding problems around our region, and the situation could get worse as the rain continues to fall over the holiday weekend.

So far, the impact has mainly been seen in road washouts, like those on Cilley Hill Road in Jericho.

Heavy rains in the eastern part of Chittenden County overwhelmed drainage systems and culverts. More than a dozen roads in the Essex-Jericho-Underhill area were closed at noontime due to washouts or high water, including Route 128, Weed Road, Old Pump Road, West Sleepy Hollow Road and Osgood Hill Road.

"Right here we have an intersection of a town road and state Route 15, where we have got a culvert that obviously couldn't handle the runoff from 4 inches of rain and we've got significant damage," Vt. Transportation Secretary Brian Searles said.

Searles says some people are having trouble getting in and out of their homes because of the water and because the roads are cut off. The priority for crews Friday is to get those roads open to get people the access they need. They hope to do that by early afternoon.

And due to the severe weather, the Essex Memorial Day Parade Committee has postponed the Essex Memorial Day Parade one week to Sat., June 1 at 10 a.m.
