As the cleanup gets underway from Thursday night's flash flooding, the focus shifts now to the broader impacts of rising rivers from around the region. All the rain so far and more to come is running into larger streams and rivers that are moving rapidly toward flood stage.
The Lamoille River has already overflowed in spots and authorities in river communities are warning residents to keep an eye on the rising water.
Green Mountain Power is also watching to see how the rising rivers are affecting the company's 32 hydro dams across the state, especially four dams along the Lamoille. So far, the company says the dam systems are operating properly, but they warn that additional rain could change conditions.
Authorities are also warning people to stay away from riverbanks that could give way and not to try to use rivers for recreational purposes while they are running high.
