Rain has wreaked havoc with the high school tennis state championships. All the finals are being held indoors. The Boys championships will take place tomorrow at the Edge in South Burlington at 2:30.
Today, the girls doubles championship was decided at First fitness in Berlin.
Leah Epstein and Claire Stoner of CVU in the far court taking on the team of South Burlington's Linley Shaw and Jasmina Jusofagic. Stoner and Epstein win the first set 6-0, and they try to keep the momentum in the the second set. Stoner shot can't be returned.
Stoner serving well today, but on this point, it's teammate Epstein with the bullet up the middle, just out of reach. That's match point. Epstein and Stoner take the second set 6-1 for a straight set state championship win. The second title for stoner and 1st for Epstein.
The girls quarterfinal matches were also today in Berlin.
No.1 seed CVU's Kathy Joseph taking on Essex's Jordan Walsh. First set, a good volley between the two. But Joseph, undefeated coming in and too much today. She wins in straight sets 6-0 and 6-1 to advance.
One court over, fourth-seeded Carly Watson out of Montpelier, battling CVU's Emily Polhemus. Second set, Watson with a comfortable lead thanks to shots like this. The backhand smash just inside the line. She moves on as well with the 6-2,6-1 victory.
Great field heading into tomorrow's semifinals which begin at 9 a.m. with the championship to follow.
