Small dams are a big priority

Posted: Updated:
UNDERHILL, Vt. -

First responders scrambled to drain a private dam Saturday afternoon to avert major damage.

Officials say the dam on Poker Hill road in Underhill nearly burst Saturday afternoon.

Members of the local volunteer Fire Department have spent much of the last few days pumping out basements, but say there are several small dams like this one that are now high on their priority list.

The Captain on scene noted that a similar problem with a beaver dam caused a big flood in the area more than a decade ago.

"We've just added some capability to allow more water to escape over the dam rather than through it or over the top of it which would cause erosion," said Captain Dwight DeCoster of the Underhill-Jericho Fire Department.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning about the potential danger of the dam, but crews tell us the situation is under control and there is no immediate threat.
