Vt. takes logging company to court

Posted: Updated:

The state of Vermont is taking one of the country's largest logging companies to court.

Court hearings began Wednesday in the case against Plum Creek Timber Company over a heavy cut on a 140-acre parcel in Lemington. The state is arguing the harvest on the former Champion Lands violated the company's forest management plan.

In addition to fines, the state wants to pull some of Plum Creek's land holdings out of the current use program, meaning the company would have to pay full property taxes on the land.
