Shumlin signs immigrant drivers' bill

Posted: Updated:

A bill allowing undocumented migrant workers to drive is now law.

Governor Peter Shumlin inked his name to the bottom of the measure just before noon Wednesday. Those interested in obtaining the driver privilege card must still pass a written exam, a road test and insure their vehicle. The only significant difference in the licensing is looser proof of residency standards.
Migrant workers, like Danilo Lopez, stood behind the Governor at the signing ceremony and celebrated their victory. "Step by step, we were able to win hearts with our stories, with our testimonies, earning respect on the way -- and now the bill is law," Lopez said, speaking through a translator.

The law will go into effect next January 1. The card cannot be used as a legal ID for anything but driving.
