New boat to pump out tanks on Lake Champlain

Posted: Updated:

Lake Champlain's first and only blue water boat launched Tuesday.

It's called Champlain's Ark and it provides a free service to boaters for properly disposing holding tank waste. The project cost $150,000, paid for by donations and a grant. It will patrol Shelburne Bay, Malletts Bay and Burlington, helping boaters properly dispose of human waste.

"Without protecting our waters, if we're not disposing waste properly, we're going to end up with a lake that's not swimmable, not drinkable, not fishable and you're not going to want to boat on it. If we can all do our small little part as a team and everybody does it, then we can insure that the lake is clean for now and for future generations," said Ross Saxton, the director of conservation education at Lake Champlain International.

The boat starts patrolling this weekend and continues through to September. There will be a set schedule rotating on a weekly basis to patrol the three bays.
