BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington's school superintendent wants to fire a teacher accused of having sex with her 17-year-old student.

Jeanne Collins recommended the school board terminate Giovanna Yaranga, 44. The Burlington High School Spanish teacher has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Though Yaranga has not been convicted, Collins says the information she has on the case provides "just cause" for termination.

"My whole focus is on, it's a similar conversation to race last year, my whole focus is on the safety and welfare of kids and it is very distressing to know that that trust can be broken," Collins said.

A final decision from the school board could come this week.
