An elderly Brandon woman was killed Thursday morning in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer. The two-vehicle crash happened around 9 a.m. on Route 7 just north of Otter Valley Union High School.
Police say Maxine Thurston, 81, crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, and was hit by a tractor-trailer. Rescue workers say Thurston was breathing when they were finally able to remove her from the vehicle. A DHART helicopter airlifted her to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
"The severity of this accident is pretty high. We have had a lot of accidents in our area and this is right on the top," Brandon Assistant Fire Chief Ron Euber said.
A section of Route 7 was closed for nearly two hours while the crash scene was cleaned up.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Police say the cause of the crash is still unknown, but medical issues may have been a factor.
