New fire safety and chemical laws enacted

Posted: Updated:

Certain chemicals found in everyday items are now banned in Vermont.

The governor and lawmakers gathered at a Burlington firehouse Thursday to sign the fire safety bills into law. It bans the fire retardant Chlorinated Tris and broadens a ban on DECA that lawmakers originally approved in 2009.

The potentially toxic chemical can be found in things like mattresses, couches and carseats. Senator Ginny Lyons sponsored the bill.

"Both of these bills are critically important for the protection not only for our firefighters -- they're number one but also for our kids and our future generations," said Lyons, D-Chittenden County.

A form of Tris was common in childen's pajamas until the 1970s when it was banned. Activists say the chemical has since crept into other products.
