Fort Ticonderoga holding annual Scots Day

Posted: Updated:

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) - The sound of bagpipes will fill the air at Fort Ticonderoga as the upstate New York historic site hosts its annual Scots Day.

The sixth daylong annual event being held Saturday commemorates Scottish heritage and their contributions to American history during the 18th century.

Activities include military re-enactors from Montreal portraying members of the British army's 42nd Highland Regiment, also known as the Black Watch. During the French and Indian War, the Black Watch lost hundreds of soldier killed and wounded during a frontal assault on French defenses at Ticonderoga in July 1758.

A special memorial ceremony honoring the Black Watch will take place late Saturday morning on the fort's battlefield. Representatives from more than a dozen Scottish clans and organizations plan to attend the ceremony.
