Burlington residents lose power

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A bizarre power outage kept many Burlington residents and businesses in the dark for much of Sunday.

Burlington Electric Department officials say the outage effected more than 400 customers in an area around College Street and between South Willard and South Winooski Streets. The outage stemmed from the main line that feeds the downtown and UVM campus. Officials who have worked many years at B.E.D say they have never heard of this happening without obvious cause -- and asked that customers remain patient while they figure out what happened.

"It's kind of hard to always be up to date with all the information. The guys are so busy bringing the system back online that we always say restoration first and information second," said B.E.D's Mary Sullivan.

The lights for most customers were back on by late Sunday afternoon, but the cause of the outage is still under investigation.
