CASTLETON, Vt. -- CVU jumped out to a first half lead then held off a furious charge from Essex to win the Division One boys lacrosse championship Monday evening at Castleton State College.
The sixth seeded Red Hawks scored the first four goals of the game and looked to go into halftime up 4-0, but James Olsen's goal with 44 seconds left in the period got Essex on the board and made it a 4-1 game at the break.
In the second half, the Hornets continue to chip away, getting within one goal three different times, at 5-4, 6-5 and finally 7-6 with under two minutes to go, but Essex could never pull even.
CVU goalie Owen Hudson and the Redhawks defense keeping the Hornets at bay just long enough to secure the 7-6 win and the Division One championship.
Hudson, a junior, had eight saves. He was set to take part in a summer seminar at the Air Force Adacemy, but the flight was Monday, and he elected to stay with his team.
Alex Bulla led CVU with two goals and three assists, while James had a team high two goals and two assists for the Hornets.
