2 rural Vt. counties get almost $1M for jobs

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Two of Vermont's most rural counties are getting more than $930,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help create jobs.

The USDA Rural Development grant will help eight nonprofit organizations across Orleans and Caledonia Counties work with private businesses to do everything from helping small farms process and sell local fruits and vegetables to offering one-on-one business counseling.

Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is one of five Rural Economic Area Partnerships in the country, a special program for rural areas.

The largest single grant targeting Orleans and Caledonia counties is $237,000 to the Northern Community Investment Corp. to provide consulting to small businesses.

The new Farm Bill pending in Congress would renew the REAP program charter.
