Posted: Updated:

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's largest electric utility and a Rutland radio station are hoping to gather 20,000-food items as part of the "2013 Pack the Paramount Food Drive."

Green Mountain Power Vice President Steve Costello says that while unemployment is down, demand for food at local food shelves remains high with many still struggling, especially families with small children, the elderly and the under-employed.

The Paramount Food Drive will run from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12, and 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13.

Donors are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the Paramount Theatre in Rutland.

The goal is to fill every seat with a box or bag of food.

The food will be turned over to the Rutland Community Cupboard and the Salvation Army.
