CVU rallies for second straight D-1 title

Tuesday, June 18th

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The game started Monday night and almost ran into Tuesday morning.  In between CVU and Essex battled for 11 tense innings before the Redhawks claimed the Division One baseball championship with a 4-3 win at Centennial Field.

The game, some three hours and 25 minutes long, is the longest D-1 championship game in VPA Touranment history.

Essex scores one run in each of the first three innings, Tyler Warren and Josh Baez with RBI singles, followed by Justin Ward's RBI ground out.  The Hornets would take a 3-1 lead into the seventh.

But CVU rallies in their last at-bat. With two runners on, Davis Mikell splits the gap in right center allowing Deagand Poland to trot home. It's a 3-2 game.

Later in the inning, the tying run 90-feet away. Kirk Fontana comes up big with the RBI single to center, his second RBI of the game, Hayden Smith scores and we go to extras knotted at 3.

Top of the 11th, after a single, wild throw and sac bunt, CVU gets a runner to third. With one out, Poland grounds one to short, it's mishandled, that allows Erik Bergkvist to score the go ahead run.

Rayne Supple shuts the door on Essex in the bottom of the inning and that's it as the Redhawks rallied late, and late into the night, to claim a second straight D-1 title.
