BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A former Burlington high school Spanish teacher who's accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student has lost a bid to have the city school board reconsider the decision to suspend and then fire her.
The board voted 9-1 Thursday to turn down Giovanna Yaranga's request, saying she didn't file it in time.
The Burlington Free Press reports Yaranga, who appeared without a lawyer, said she mailed a letter June 5 appealing the superintendent's May 30 decision to suspend her with a recommendation that she be fired.
But an administrative assistant said no such letter was ever received.
The board decided June 12 to terminate Yaranga. Two days later, Yaranga hand-delivered her appeal.
Yaranga has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
