Well-known Burlington pharmacist retires

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A familiar face in Burlington's New North End is retiring.

Manny Chernoff, 79, has been a pharmacist in the Queen City for 45 years, the last 30 as owner of the Vermont Family Pharmacy, formerly the Medicine Shoppe. Wednesday was his last day on the job.

Chernoff says he's most proud of the personal service he's given, which he says you can't get at a chain store.

"We've done a lot of good things for people, that's what I really enjoy," Chernoff said. "The lady was just here when you were here and she said to me, 'I remember when my mother was sick with lung cancer and you brought the medication on a Saturday and I never forgot that.' And we hear that from people all the time."

Chernoff and his wife, Joan, now plan to travel and continue playing cribbage, his favorite game. But the Vermont Family Pharmacy isn't going anywhere. Chernoff's daughter is also a pharmacist and will now run the business.
