Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Sea lamprey have threatened Lake Champlain for decades.

The species is a parasite that looks like an eel and feeds on fish. Lamprey attack a variety of species including trout, salmon, walleye, whitefish and perch. Each lamprey can destroy up to 40 pounds of fish in its lifetime. WCAX has also done stories on lamprey attacking swimmers in Lake Champlain.

Bradley Young is a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Vermont. The Great Lake Fishery Commission gave Young an award recognizing his innovative work in sea lamprey control.

Young talks about his work.
