Shelburne affordable housing project gets underway

Posted: Updated:
SHELBURNE, Vt. -

Construction on a new neighborhood in the heart of Shelburne is officially underway.

Officials say the Harrington Village neighborhood is designed for people of all ages and income levels. The Champlain Housing Trust and Housing Vermont are partnering on the project, which includes low-income and senior housing, with 82 new homes and 42 family apartments. The rental units will be available next summer, with purchased homes to follow.

"Shelburne has a reputation for not having affordable housing. This is one step to say yes, Shelburne has affordable housing. Think about the village and the site and the vibrancy that people living here will bring to the village. There are a lot of purposes with this particular project" said Paul Bohne, the Shelburne town manager.

The vacancy rate for rental housing in Chittenden County is less than 1 percent.
