Four young Vermont gymnasts are getting a taste of another type of athletic challenge this week in Lake Placid, freestyle aerial skiing.
The quartet, 15-year-old Tyra Izor and 16-year-olds Megan Nick, Kira Tanghe and Sarah Haggerty, who all train at Green Mountain Gymnastics in Williston, were invited to take part in the Elite Air Tryout Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.
The camp, which invites 15-20 athletes, looks to identify potential talent for the US Ski Team's Elite Aerial Development Program (EADP) and in an interesting twist, knowing how to ski is not required. These young athletes are enjoying the chance to try something different.
And guess who else we ran into training in Lake Placid. None other than freestyle moguls World Champion and Olympic gold medalist Hannah Kearney.
The Norwich, Vermont native considers Whiteface her home mountain and it shows. She's won five straight World Cup events in Lake Placid, and it's the work she puts in during the summer that allows her to reach to pinnacle of her sport in the winter.
