Plans in works to expand Mt. Snow airport

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Vt. (AP) - The new owner of the decaying Mount Snow Airport wants to renovate it to bring more visitors to the region.

The airport hasn't been officially closed, but the online FAA information for pilots reports that its runway is deteriorating and encroaching trees make it unsafe.

Vermont Public Radio reports Jim Barnes bought the airport on June 6. He also owns the Hermitage Inn and Haystack Ski Area.

Barnes hopes to extend the airport runway so that private jets can land there.

Barnes is also trying to buy 55 house lots surrounding the airport. The lots were acquired by the town of Wilmington through tax sales.

Barnes says the land would provide a buffer and allow more runway space.
